Jorge Mariscal

JORGE MARISCAL is the Faculty Equity Advisor for the Division of Arts and Humanities, Professor of Literature, and founding Director of the Chicano/a~Latino/a Arts and Humanities Program at UC San Diego. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine, and joined the faculty of UCSD in 1986 after teaching at Grinnell College and the University of Wisconsin, Madison.


Dr. Mariscal’s research areas include early modern Iberian culture and the origins of Western racism, contemporary Chicano/a history and culture, and the role of Mexican Americans in the U.S. military. His books include Aztlán and Viet Nam: Chicano and Chicana Experiences of the War (University of California Press, 1999) and Brown-Eyed Children of the Sun: Lessons from the Chicano Movement, 1965-1975 (University of New Mexico Press, 2005).


During his time at UCSD, he has been a strong advocate for the inclusion of students from historically underrepresented communities. In 1989, he co-founded the UCSD Chicano-Latino Concilio, an advocacy group working to make UCSD more responsive to the Latino population of California. In 1995, he chaired the planning committee that led to the creation of the highly successful UCSD Cross-Cultural Center. He has served on numerous committees and task forces including the Committee on Undergraduate Admissions, the Chancellor’s Task Force on Underrepresented Faculty, and the Task Force on Yield of Undergraduate Students.


Dr. Mariscal has chaired the UCSD Cesar E. Chavez Celebration Committee since its inception. He received the UCSD Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award in 1999.
