Equity Advisors
Paul Yu

PAUL KIT LAI YU has been the Equity Advisor of the Jacobs School of Engineering (2007-2009), and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at UC San Diego. He is presently the Associate Vice-Chancellor for Research Initiatives at UCSD. He continues to serve as the Faculty Equity Advising liaison for Organized Research Units at UCSD. He received his B.S. and M.S. in 1979 and Ph.D. in 1983, all from the California Institute of Technology. He joined the faculty of UC San Diego in 1983 and served as ECE Department Chair from 2003-2007. At UCSD, he is a faculty member of the Materials Science and Engineering Program, Institute of Engineering in Medicine, and an affiliate faculty of the Nanoengineering Department.


Paul Yu’s main research thrust is in the area of microwave photonics which deals with transmission and processing of microwave signals in the optical domain.  In his works, he emphasizes the investigation of linearity properties of optical transmitters and optical receivers for fiber-optic links. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), a Fellow of the Optical Society of America, and a Fellow of the International Society for Optical Engineering. He is an editor of the IEEE Electron Devices Letters.


Paul Yu has been a strong advocate of continuing education and professional development of engineers. He is presently the Vice President of Educational Activities of IEEE Electron Devices Society and served as one of its Distinguished Lecturers. At UCSD, he is the founding faculty advisor to a number of student society chapters: Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu and IEEE LEO/EDS.
