The word “mentor”, of Greek origin, refers to “a wise and trusted advisor.” In the academic environment, mentoring can help individuals at every step of their career by providing guidance and assistance. Mentoring can be informal or formal; have a specific or general focus; and take place between individuals, in groups, in person, or via email. Often, it is useful to have multiple mentors in different areas of expertise. UCSD currently has several faculty mentoring programs, and our aim is enhance mentoring opportunities.
