Faculty recruiting is a primary focus of equity activities. A major goal is to encourage proactive search activities that can increase applicant pool size and diversity: a large pool of candidates fosters academic excellence. As well, we aim to promote best practices in all departments, and to facilitate partner hiring. Best practices include broadening the search area as much as possible, agreeing on criteria to judge all applicants before the search begins, guarding against biases in decision making, and treating all candidates respectfully and equally. Contributions to diversity are recognized in the academic appointment process at UCSD.
